Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) secretary Silvestre Bello III is hopeful that the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which aims to protect overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Kuwait will be signed before the Ramadan season. In an interview, Bello said the Philippine government is only waiting for President Rodrigo Duterte’s instructions on the date of the signing. He said the date should be before the Ramadan season, which is expected to begin in May. “It should be within April because once we enter May, it would be Ramadan and [Kuwaiti officials] would not be available,” Bello said. The Ministry of Economy expects the prices of 10,000 items on shelves in 600 outlets in UAE to be slashed by 25 to 50 per cent and even more during Ramadan. Dr Hashim Al Naomi, Manager of the Consumer Protection Department at the Ministry, called on Union Co-ops and other outlets to swiftly announce the discounts for the upcoming holy month, as per an Al Ittihad report. Al Nuaimi added that the ministry has set up several meetings with outlets in order to set a comprehensive Ramadan plan. All goods will be made available to consumers ahead of time.
